Animal Welfare receives $10,000 grant from Petco Foundation

The Petco Foundation has awarded the Gwinnett County Animal Welfare and Enforcement Division a $10,000 grant to help reduce shelter intake and keep animals in loving homes.
To reduce the number of pets surrendered, the grant funds will support vaccinations, spay/neuter services, microchipping, and educational assistance that encourages owners to keep their pets. The division will begin offering these services at public events once they can be performed safely. With these funds, Gwinnett Animal Welfare and Enforcement aims to decrease intake numbers by 20 percent in 2020 and 2021.
Gwinnett Animal Welfare received 7,384 animals in 2019. Alan Davis, Animal Welfare and Enforcement Division director, said the grant money will provide a significant boost to their Animal Welfare Targeted Intake Prevention and Pets for Life outreach programs in Snellville, Lawrenceville, and Norcross.
“We’re grateful for the Petco Foundation’s support, which will enable us to help families get the resources they need to keep their pet,” said Davis. “We anticipate that providing these basic veterinary resources and services to those who might not otherwise have access will create a healthier environment for pets and families and reduce the number of calls and intakes.”
The shelter is currently open with limited visitors during regular business hours. County to shift traffic Monday on Alcovy Road at Harbins road

The Gwinnett County Department of Transportation will make a traffic shift on the Harbins Road/State Route 316 interchange project Monday, August 10, when motorists move onto a new alignment on Alcovy Road at Harbins Road.
The realignment moves Alcovy Road southward, providing additional distance between the Alcovy/Harbins intersection and the new ramps for the interchange.
Message boards are up and flaggers are ready to direct traffic as drivers shift onto the new detour alignment after the morning rush hour on Monday.
“This is one of our last traffic shifts,” said Alan Chapman, director of the Gwinnett Department of Transportation. “The next shift will be toward the end of the project when traffic moves onto the new bridge over SR 316.”
C.W. Matthews Contracting Co. Inc. began construction of the grade-separated interchange and bridge in fall 2019. Construction is expected to be complete by early 2022, weather permitting. The project is funded by the 2017 SPLOST program.
The project includes a new five-lane bridge over SR 316 with dual westbound left-turn lanes, a single eastbound turn lane and through lanes. The new interchange also will have full access ramps eastbound and westbound, as well as a collector-distributor road with direct access to Sugarloaf Parkway. The project also includes traffic signal upgrades, sidewalks, curb and gutter, and retaining walls.
On Monday, flagging operators will help drivers with the new traffic pattern. Please drive alert while navigating the interchange. For more information, contact the Gwinnett County Department of Transportation at 770.822.7400.
