Working for Gwinnett: Brandon Harris
Brandon Harris enjoys learning languages like German, Spanish, and Vietnamese. Although he’s travelled the globe with his military family, Brandon calls Georgia home. For the past eight years, Brandon has worked for Gwinnett Water Resources.
Just a few years after working here, Brandon decided he wanted to live in Gwinnett, too.
“The population that we work for is extremely diverse, and I like that aspect of Gwinnett County,” Brandon said.
Before working for Gwinnett, Brandon worked in the private sector as an engineer specializing in floodplain modeling. Due to his experience with government agencies like FEMA, Brandon said the transition to the Department of Water Resources was a natural one.
As a program manager for Gwinnett County dam inspections, maintenance, scoping, and compliance – there is never a dull moment on the job.
“Every day, we’re presented with a new set of challenges,” he said.
Brandon said most Gwinnett dams are between 50 to 60 years old. Although his team is aware and prepared for endless possibilities, they usually don’t know exactly what will happen until it’s time to step into action.
“Dam safety is important, and we all have a part to play in the hazards associated with them,” Brandon said.
At times, Brandon and his team are responsible in handling dam emergencies when the rest of the County might be sleeping. He and his team created a system that enables the County’s E-911 center to alert residents in “dam breach zones” if there is an emergency.
“I am proud of that project because not many governments have that,” he said.
Keeping the residents of our community safe is priority for Brandon’s team — and the entire County government. Prioritizing our community is how Brandon interprets the County’s “Vibrantly Connected” slogan.
“Vibrantly connected means interacting with and having our thumb on the pulse of Gwinnett’s population to better serve them and meet their needs,” Harris said.
