County waives fee for unregistered first-time false alarms

On Tuesday, the Gwinnett Board of Commissioners amended the False Alarm Reduction Program Ordinance to waive the $25 fee for first-time offenders with unregistered alarm systems.

Under the amended ordinance, first-time offenders with unregistered systems will receive a notice with instructions on how to register their alarms through the CryWolf System and have the $25 fee waived. Succeeding false alarms from unregistered systems will result in an additional $25 fee per false alarm along with a $25 fee for second-time offenders, a $50 fee for third-time offenders, and a $100 fee for the fourth time or greater.

The Gwinnett False Alarm Reduction Program was launched last year to reduce taxpayers’ costs and improve police response times to emergencies. Nationwide, False alarms cost taxpayers an estimated $1.8 billion annually. In 2021, Gwinnett Police responded to more than 22,500 alarm calls, with only 163 of those calls being true emergencies.
